: This paper proposes a novel power loss balancing method for an open-ended winding permanent magnet synchronous motor (OEW-PMSM). In the conventional method, power loss is typically reduced by clamping three out of the six legs in a dual inverter structure. However, the presence of third harmonic back electromotive force (3rd BEMF) causes nonlinear distortion (ND) in the output voltage and current when the conventional method is applied to drive OEW-PMSM. In addition, the power loss imbalance between the switches of the dual inverter structure was not considered. To address these drawbacks, this paper presents a pulse-width modulation (PWM) method that simultaneously suppresses the zero-sequence current (ZSC) caused by the 3rd BEMF and reduces power loss by clamping three out of six legs through the injection of an offset voltage into the phase reference voltage. Power loss balance is achieved over two periods of the fundamental frequency through this offset voltage injection. In addition, ND is considered and compensated for, ensuring that the dual inverter operates within the linear modulation region. The validity of the proposed method is verified through simulation and experimental results using an OEW-PMSM, including the 3rd BEMF.
