6. Abstract
: This article introduces a configuration method for an active railway traction substation based on the modular multilevel converter (MMC) and analyzes the operating principles of the output voltage control methods. The AC railway power supply system in Korea performs voltage conversion through a Scott transformer, thereby encountering issues such as voltage drop due to traction line impedance, grid voltage imbalance, and harmonics. However, an active railway traction substation, by replacing the Scott transformer with MMC and applying power electronics-based control methods, can overcome these issues. Given the current scarcity of research on active railway traction substations in Korea, this article introduces a method for configuring an MMC-based active railway traction substation that aligns with the specifications of the domestic railway power supply system and elaborates on the comprehensive control methods. Specifically, the article presents control block diagrams of three distinct output voltage control methods for supplying voltage to the traction line and analyzes their operating principles. The operational validity of the active railway traction substation introduced in this article is verified through simulation.
